After the arrival of more than 6000 migrants in just a few hours on the island of Lampedusa in Italy, Germany has decided to suspend the voluntary reception of asylum seekers from Italy on Wednesday 13 September. Despite being provided for by the European agreements in terms of migration, Berlin cites “strong migratory pressure” to justify its decision. According to the German newspaper Die Welt, the Italian government of Giorgia Meloni, on the other hand,is no longer taking back asylum seekers that other countries want to be transfer to it, on the pretext that Italy no longer has sufficient reception capacities.his decision “reinforces the major challenges for Germany in terms of reception and accommodation capacities“.
