In the Niger desert, where dust and hope mix, Ibrahim Amadou Abdoulaye, better known as Babandjida, has carved out a unique chapter of his life. His journey, intimately tied to the Tabarkat gold mine near the Algerian border in the town of Arlit, tells the story of a relentless pursuit that swings between dream and harsh reality.

Originally from Niamey, Ibrahim worked as a carpenter before setting off on his gold mining adventure. “Some friends and I were preparing to head to the Djado site when an uncle told us about a new gold mine opening in Tabarkat,” he recalls. Pooling together 300,000 CFA francs each, he embarked on a journey that was to change his life.

First challenge: building a team and strategy

Upon arriving at the site, Babandjida and his companions divided into two groups. One would scout for gold using a detector, while the other worked as labourers for established miners. The arrangement was straightforward, for every kilogramme of gold discovered, the detectorists earned one gramme, while the laborers received one gramme per day. The early days were grueling and after eight months, most of his companions gave up. However, Babandjida’s determination kept him going.

Between trade and survival: adapting to progress

Buoyed by his initial earnings, Babandjida began to diversify. “With the money I had, I went back to Niamey to buy generators and refrigerators,” he says. He transported everything to the Tabarkat site and opened a small shop, selling cold drinks and offering phone charging services, a profitable venture that fuelled further investments. The young entrepreneur expanded his operations to include a restaurant run by his brother, a money transfer service, and even a brokerage for gold deals.

The road to success proved anything but smooth. As time went on, the challenges mounted, exposing the unpredictable and often unforgiving realities of life on the gold frontier.

A journey full of pitfalls

“Contrary to what my adventure might suggest, not everything was rosy during the twelve years I spent at the Tabarkat gold mine,” Babandjida admits. He speaks candidly about moments when he came close to death. “We weren’t allowed to operate there, and Algerian troops would hunt us down with helicopters that fired on us without restraint,” he recalls. Early in his career as a mediator, he fell victim to a scheme orchestrated by his own driver and a group of bandits. “Fortunately, I wasn’t physically harmed. They only took the money and gold I was carrying.” But the most harrowing experience came when he got lost in the desert, an ordeal that nearly turned fatal. “It was ten days before a truckload of smugglers found us and brought me to the town of Arlit, where I was finally able to alert the gendarmerie,” he says.

Lessons etched in the life’s experience

Now settled in Niamey, Babandjida runs a shop, works as a real estate agent and trades in second-hand cars. Reflecting on his journey, he shares the lessons that have stayed with him: “I’ve learned so much—especially about coexistence—sharing space and hardship with people from Chad, Libya, Sudan, and, of course, my fellow Nigeriens.” The experience broadened his horizons far beyond his hometown. Through resilience and ingenuity, he not only survived but built a foundation for lasting success.

Babandjida’s story is a powerful testament to human determination in the face of adversity. Behind the glitter of gold lie hardship, danger and sacrifice—but also opportunity, transformation as well ashope. His journey resonates far beyond the dunes of Tabarkat, echoing as a symbol of endurance and ambition.
