The Guinean Gendarmerie Maritime et Fluviale (Coastal Protection Brigade) intercepted 19 individuals on 28 avril 2025 in Kamsar, a town located approximately 241 kilometres from Conakry the capital, a group of migrants attempting to enter Europe. Their trial, which began a week earlier  at the Boké Court of First Instance, culminated in a one-year suspended sentence verdict on 14 May 2025.  On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, the Court of First Instance in Boké sentenced 19 individuals, including 11 Senegalese nationals, to a one-year suspended prison term and a fine of 500,000 Guinean francs ( over 33,000 CFA francs)each for migrant smuggling attempt. The prosecutor described the sentences as being appropriate in order to deter future similar offenses.

The defendants, a group of young undocumented migrants most of them Senegalese, were arrested during an operation aimed at dismantling a migrant smuggling network. During the trial, it was revealed that each Guinean migrant had paid 10 million Guinean francs (over 650,000 CFA francs) for passage, money allegedly handed over to members of the security forces involved in the trafficking. The Senegalese migrants, meanwhile, each paid 500,000 CFA francs to an individual identified as Banaro, who was named as the mastermind behind the network.

“The public prosecutor’s office will not be appealing, as justice has been served and the judge ruled in accordance with the law,” stated Public prosecutor Amadou Diallo at the Boké Court of First Instance, following the verdict. Prosecutor Diallo considered the court’s decision fair. He noted that the defendants were both accomplices and victims of the migrant smuggling network and emphasised that the sanctions are intended to deter others from attempting illegal migration, underlining the importance of this befitting ruling, as a warning.
