During a meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs) at the National Assembly on Monday, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko affirmed the government’s strong commitment to intensifying efforts against irregular emigration, with a particular focus on dismantling human smuggling/trafficking networks. “No responsible country can remain passive in the face of irregular migration. We are considering stronger sanctions,” he stated in response to a question raised in parliament regarding the tragic sea crossings often undertaken by Senegalese families.
Issuing a stark warning to smugglers, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko made it clear that the State intends to “step up sanctions against migrant ferry operators,” accusing them of preying on the vulnerability of young people seeking a better future. However, he tempered his remarks by acknowledging the complexity of the issue: “Young people are chasing an illusory solution to a very real problem. There is no justification for risking one’s life at sea,” he lamented, urging a collective awakening to confront the root causes of irregular migration.
While emphasizing the importance of a firm crackdown, the Prime Minister also highlighted the need for a comprehensive and inclusive strategy: “The fight against illegal migration cannot be limited to punitive measures. It must be accompanied by sustainable solutions, developed in collaboration with all Senegalese.”
His remarks come at a time when attempts to reach Europe are on the rise, often at great peril, particularly for young Senegalese driven by a desperate search for economic opportunity.
