And what if we talked about migration differently? This is the successful bet of the radio series “Ana sama xarit? Ci yoonu tukki yi” (Where is my friend? On the routes of migration), a creation by the Ëpoukay studio. It takes us on a journey through dreams of America, visa processes, hopes of departure, and the often harsh realities of African migration routes.
In twelve ten-minute episodes, this Wolof fiction tells the story of Ibou, a young musician from Dakar who sets out to find his mysteriously vanished friend. The narrative, inspired by a true event, was written, performed, and edited in Dakar in less than four months. “Ana sama xarit?” is the result of a collective effort. Professionals and amateurs — artists, delivery workers, students, researchers, and even an actual mototaxi driver — lend their voices to portray a cast of authentic characters. The outcome is a vibrant immersion into the diverse stories of Senegalese migration.
Giving a voice rather than passing judgment
Far from traditional campaigns that discourage departure, this series aims to encourage reflection. It does not moralise but instead creates space for dialogue. It captures the doubts of young people, the worries of families, the dreams of leaving, as well as the desire to return. It is a series that can be listened to alone or with others, with emotion or a smile — but always prompting thought and discussion.
From 17 June 2025, “Ana sama xarit?”, produced with the support of the NGO COSPE as part of the INFORMA project funded by the European Union, will be broadcast on community and public radio stations in Senegal, streamed online, on social media, and during cultural events in Dakar (including the Yennenga Centre, Yendu-Bi, Place du Souvenir Africain, among others).
