On 14 August 2025, the High Seas Patrol Vessel (PHM) Niani intercepted a canoe carrying 147 migrants bound for Europe, around 100 kilometres off the coast.

Among them were 125 men and 22 women (including 10 minors and two babies). The recorded nationalities were as follows: 83 Senegalese, 29 Gambians, 23 Guineans (Conakry), nine Malians, one Ivorian, and two Ghanaians.

After being transferred to the naval base, all of the migrants were handed over to the National Division for Combating Migrant Trafficking and Related Practices (DNLT) for legal proceedings.

This operation was part of the joint maritime surveillance activities carried out by the Interministerial Committee for Combating Irregular Migration (CILMI) and the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) during the Grand Magal of Touba and Assumption Day. The aim is to prevent any attempts to leave Senegalese shores for Europe in makeshift boats.
