The situation of Senegalese nationals living in Mauritania has become increasingly alarming in recent weeks. There have been multiple reports of arbitrary arrests, extortion under threat of deportation and degrading treatment, which in some cases amounts to torture. Frustration within the community is mounting, as the response from the Senegalese authorities is widely regarded as inadequate or ineffective. Although a bilateral agreement was signed in June to regulate the status and stay of Senegalese citizens in Mauritania, its implementation has so far been hesitant and limited in impact.

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns led by associations and community leaders, the crisis shows no sign of abating. Amid the uncertainty, many individuals have chosen to stay at home and forfeit their daily income in order to stay safe. Others are now seriously considering returning to Senegal if no tangible solution emerges in the near future.
