On 13 September 2025, the third edition of the DiafaSud conference took place at the National Museum of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso as part of the 72 Hours of the Diaspora event. The central theme of the event emphasised the crucial role of the African diaspora in the continent’s sustainable development and the impact of African culture as a driving force behind this progress.
Serge Bayala emphasised that true development cannot be achieved by turning away from the cultural wealth of Africa’s ancestors. He stressed the need to ground economic and social progress in the local values and expertise that make Africa unique. He believes that the diaspora, with its experience of various societies around the world, can play a vital role in transferring technology and skills.
From Germany to Switzerland and the United States to France, Africans living abroad are active in various sectors, including brewing, construction and agribusiness. They can play a decisive role in adapting modern technologies to African realities. Serge Bayala cited the example of a Burkinabè entrepreneur who founded a Swiss company that refines the traditional local beverage dolo, thereby promoting cultural expertise while incorporating modern techniques.
The diaspora plays an important cultural and diplomatic role, doing more than just transferring technology. They can promote African values, artisanal production and culinary traditions worldwide, thereby increasing the continent’s global influence.
Bayala reminded the audience that the African diaspora represents an “18th region” of Burkina Faso and other African countries – a human community that can become a pillar of progress and prosperity by combining external experience with deep cultural roots. He called for an active diaspora that can import modern expertise while exporting African culture and products, in order to foster sustainable development and self-reliance.
This conference reaffirmed that Africa’s development hinges on recognising and valuing its diaspora. Through culture and innovation, the diaspora plays a vital role in building a sustainable future for the continent.
During the event, several young entrepreneurs were given livestock kits, providing a concrete example of the commitment to fostering sustainable and innovative economic sectors in the region.
