In Mauritania, there are two types of passports available to citizens: VIP passport and ordinary passport. The VIP passport for business people with 64 pages costs 10,000 MRU Ouguiya, (approximately 161.000 Frs CFA). As for the ordinary passport, it has 32 pages and costs 3,000 MRU (approximately 48.000 Frs CFA).
Both types of passports have existed since the creation of the National Agency for Population Registration and Secure Titles (ANRPTS) in 2010.
However, there has recently been a shortage of 32-page passport stubs in the country. This shortage is mainly due to the high demand among young Mauritanians who wish to travel. The reasons for this increased demand can be manifold.
First, young Mauritanians are increasingly interested in traveling abroad for a variety of reasons, such as study, professional opportunities, cultural exchanges, and tourism. The regular passport offers them a more economical and accessible option for their travels.
This increased demand has led to a decrease in the supply of 32-page passport stubs, creating a shortage. The Mauritanian authorities are aware of this situation and are working to address it in order to meet the growing needs of young travellers.
